When it first launched in 2003, Frieze was a lone ranger in the calendar, but the week's festivities have extended over time to
include numerous
other fairs, such as PAD London, 1:54 Contemporary African
Art Fair, and Frieze Masters, not to mention the major sales at the international auction houses.
Speaking at the New York Times
Art Leaders Network in Berlin, Mr. Zwirner got verbal support for his proposal from
other conference participants,
including Marc Glimcher, president of the Pace Gallery, and Elizabeth Dee, founder and chief executive of the Independent
Art Fair in New York and Brussels.
However, even with the more focused look of the 2013
fair, one could not ignore the absence of many larger galleries,
