The exhibition in MMOMA includes video works («Tightrope», «Gamsutl»), objects («Landscape»), the
artefacts from a past epoch which are the artist's collection
of Soviet signs (such as «Dagestan», Sport» and «Gostorgovlya»), videos
of food - related performances («Caspian Sea», «Crystal Balls» and «Stomach It» amongst
others) and various video evidence
of the life - asserting practices
of Super Taus — Taus Makhacheva's heroic alter - ego.
Spiralling joyfully out
of control, they joined a raucous collection arranged atop a large wooden table, Cinaedus Table MDCCLXXV (2007), that also included glitter shoes, star - catchers made
of yarn, glassware, pine - cones, butterflies in jars, cacti, tinfoil, candlesticks and a gilded log, among
other art and
artefacts.
They are connected by memory, events and objects, but they are not thereby symbiotic because artworks and mere
artefacts of historical significance are ontologically different things; and in that differences resides a sovereign semantic tension which dictates that one can only illuminate the
other at the cost
of its own sacrifice.
At the same time, the connection between these
artefacts and a specific culture and age unearths their political and social implications: A humble household job, mostly carried out by women and serving private needs, is the
other side to an art that was fit to celebrate the wealth and power
of the great European courts.
No one doubts that there is a slow down
of surface temperature rise after the 1998 El Nino, which is probably an
artefact due to internal variability
of one or the
other kind..
As I've pointed out in
other essays, the notion that the whole world is anxious about global warming or climate change is an
artefact of the way in which public opinion surveys construct their questions.
