I spend a lot of time helping couples work through and get past the arguments that keep plaguing their relationships, I help them to understand each

levels, and I help them to increase
emotional and physical intimacy in their relationship.

other forms of violence) are more likely than children who have not been exposed to trauma to experience physiologic changes
at the neurotransmitter and hormonal

level of brain structure) that render them susceptible to heightened arousal and an incapacity to adapt emotions to an appropriate
level.21 This
emotional state increases their sensitivity to subsequent experiences of trauma and impairs their capacity to focus, remember, learn, and engage in self - control.22
Skill in realizing that inner
emotional state need not correspond to outer expression, both in oneself and in
others, and
at more mature
levels the ability to understand that one's
emotional - expressive behavior may impact on another and take this into account in one's self - presentation strategies.
Antenatal depression may not only alter development of stress - related biological systems in the fetus, but may also increase risk of obstetrical complications.6 Postnatal depression may also be an early life stressor given known associations with lower
levels of sensitive, responsive care needed for infants» development of health attachment relationships,
emotional regulation skills, interpersonal skills and stress response mechanisms.7 Early life stressors, such as those that might be associated with maternal depression, can influence brain development, which continues
at a rapid pace
at least for several years after birth.8 Problems in any of these aspects of development may disrupt the earliest stages of socio -
emotional and cognitive development, predisposing to the later development of depression or
other disorders.
Couples may benefit from women's
emotional intimacy in particular, relative to
other aspects of connectedness, by its role in creating an open atmosphere to exploring conflict
at deeper
levels and doing so in a constructive, emotionally - regulated fashion.
The goals and activities of the Center were designed to strengthen the capacity of childcare agencies and Head Start to improve outcomes for young children and their families through: a) a focus on promoting the social

The discussion about «one partner seek [ing] to control the
other through the use of abusive patterns or behaviors that operate
at a variety of

emotional, psychological, and physical» (p. 8) will lead the DV community to focusing on the coercive control aspects, while not noticing the more dangerous family dynamic approach on which most mental health professionals will focus.
We get caught in these cycles and we never really have a chance to experience each
other at a deeper
emotional level.
