black - and - white storyline plays out in
education, even as
other sensitive areas of domestic public policy (like health care or environmental protection) prove far more comfortable with the role that for - profits play.

Critics claim that this high number —
blacks are 1.4 times more likely to be placed in special
education than
other races and ethnicities combined — shows that
black children are put into special
education because schools are racially biased.
Time and again,
black people have been in a position where
others have had the power to make fundamental decisions about the
education of their children.
Other equity warriors followed the path carved by our nation's first
black president, whose
education secretaries (Arne Duncan and John King) also wielded their respective pulpits expertly, moving issues like «teacher quality» front and center in the reform agenda.
In a report released this month, the Southern
Education Foundation says the demographic shift was fueled by a combination of factors: an influx of Latinos and members of
other ethnic groups, a return of many African - American families to the South, and higher birthrates among both
blacks and Latinos than among whites.
We look separately at the effects on the outcomes of Haitian - born incumbent students,
other immigrant students, U.S. - born Haitian Creole speakers,
other U.S. - born
black students,
other U.S. - born non-
black students, limited English proficient students, those who are not English language learners, children with mothers who have less than a high school diploma, children with mothers who have a high school diploma but no
other education, and children whose mothers attended college.
A cursory study of
black - led
education movements — Freedom Schools and the East, among
others — would have revealed that empowerment engenders excellence, not zero tolerance and shame employed in the «no - excuses» model favored by white - led organizations.
[The politics of rationing
education is a reason why districts and
other traditionalists also oppose the expansion of public charter schools and
other forms of school choice that are helping
Black and Latino children attain high quality
education; charters fall outside of the control of districts and therefore, open the doors of opportunity for those historically denied great teachers and college - preparatory curricula.]
Meanwhile American public
education fuels the nation's school - to - prison pipeline that traps
Black, as well as
other minority and immigrant children, onto paths of despair.
I could not look to
Black leaders in this situation because they are consumed with the politics of the district vs. charter debate, just like many
others in
education.
They are mostly NAACP members who are also the people on the ground, every day, living as
Black Americans and using their gifts and talents (and courage) to make
education better for
other people's children.
After all, those collaborations against the futures of
black people can be seen today as
black teachers, school leaders, police officers, and politicians team up with
others to perpetuate the nation's
education crisis and the overcriminalization of
black lives.
It's a time when many are planning strong push - back activities against Rahm Emanuel and
other autocrats who are listening only to their rich friends while thumbing their noses at the people who actually use the public schools, at solid
education research, and ultimately at the mostly poor, mostly
black and brown children whom they claim to love so much.
