The good news is that every
other major Christian
bookstore plans to
carry the book.
Be aware that some stores may specialize in local books, while
others (often large commercial
bookstores) tend to
carry the more well - known titles from
other countries, including books translated from English.
Regarding
other bookstores not
carrying their titles, Amazon shouldn't have been surprised.
On the
other hand, indie
bookstores almost always refuse to
carry any book published through Amazon or subsidiaries.
A retailer can feature a supplier's items in its advertising and promotional circulars, «stack it high» in the front of the store, keep small quantities on hand in the back aisle, or not
carry the item at all, and
bookstores and
other retailers do these every day.
Bookstores could decide they don't want to
carry books any more, but the
other outlets can decide they don't want to
carry books anymore.
Regardless of their decision about
carrying your book in their stores, your book will be available in the Chapters.Indigo.ca online
bookstore as well as
other key online book retailers.
And don't even think you're going to be the one self publisher who's able to convince the brick - and - mortar stores (
other than a stray independent
bookstore here or there) to
carry your book on their shelves.
If the author could show a local following,
bookstores would often
carry the book, but few
others showed any interest.
Some books show up in ePUB for the B&N Nook as well, which means they exist in ePUB format, but because of B&N's proprietary DRM, I can't read them, and they aren't always
carried by
other digital
bookstores.
Now I know, and you know, that Amazon only approaches a near monopoly on sales where traditional publishing, distributors and their friends Barnes and Noble and Books - a-million and many
other fine
bookstores have either refused to
carry the book, refused to reprint, refused to restock when copies are sold.
The bottom line here is that as Amazon's power to sign up books away from the major publishers grows, the retailers who depend on publishers for a flow of commercial product suffer along with the publishers... B&N's decision seems to me like the right move for them... On the
other hand, authors and agents who might have considered an Amazon publishing deal will have to think twice if they know very few
bookstores will
carry it... There are a lot of smart people engaged in a pitched battle here.
Almost all
bookstores, and some
other book -
carrying retailers, are listed in Bowker's book trade directory.
Amazon would like
other retailers to
carry them, but many
bookstores are planning to boycott these lines, because Amazon is a rival bookseller.
The
bookstore will
carry a choice selection of books by celebrated artists of the GMF along with
other art - related topics, limited edition artists» prints and selected contemporary art gifts.
