The larger the number of heartworm infected dogs and
other canids not receiving monthly preventatives, the less likely a parasite species is to mutate.

An international team of scientists, led by researchers at the German Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW), conducted genetic analyses of CDV strains obtained from a range of carnivores between 1993 and 2012 and discovered that lethal CDV infections in lions and hyenas during the 1993/1994 epidemic was caused by a rare and genetically distinct CDV strain with three rare mutations
not present in any
other Serengeti strain isolated from domestic dogs or wild
canids.
Still,
other researchers have argued that the dingo doesn't control smaller predators as well as might be expected, and that the large
canid comes with its own problems in terms of over-predation.
Dogs and
other canids evolved successfully through hunting and scavenging, consuming foods that were
not at all like the kibble so many are fed today.
In general, we do have to be cautious about drawing parallels between the social behavior of wolves and
other wild
canids vs. dogs, because we know that there are important genetic behavioral differences — for example, feral dogs live in much looser social groups than wolves with members coming and going frequently, and do
not have a strictly defined social hierarchy.
