colonial town's rose - hued rooftops and tolling bells of La Parroquia church.
Whether you live on Ambergris Caye, or are just visiting, itÂ's always worth making a side trip to our next door neighbor, Guatemala. IÂ'm thinking of two places, in particular, that I think are worth visiting. The first is Tikal  — the largest and most famous Mayan Ruin.  The
other option that comes to mind is Antigua. ItÂ's a charming Spanish
colonial city surrounded by three volcanoes. This
town provides a perfect setting for taking Spanish immersion classes.
Unlike
other colonial Mexican
towns and cities we've visited — like San Miguel de Allende — Morelia is quite non-touristy.
The
town is clustered with wooden houses, some with Mexican decor,
others Caribbean, and some still remain with the English
colonial architecture.
Other attractions nearby include the stunning Phi Phi Island, with a range of water sports, snorkeling and diving; the equally beautiful and spiritual Wat Chalong and Old Phuket
Town — with its unique blend of Portuguese -
colonial and Chinese architecture; and Phuket FantaSea, an entertaining, extravaganza show.
Other awesome things to do include whale - watching, exploring some of the islands, heading into the desert and soaking up the atmosphere in the
colonial towns.
The
colonial town of York, set in the lush Avon Valley, tiny wheatlands townships and
other strange rocks protruding from arid soil show the real Australia, ever waiting for life giving rains.
Wide tree - lined avenues, Mediterranean - style architecture and the presence of restaurants with names such as Le Maison Rose and Café des Arts bear testimony to the
town's French
colonial heritage, but in every
other respect Pondy is an authentically Indian coastal resort.
The Historic Center is the oldest part of the city (along with some
other, formerly separate
colonial towns such as Coyoacán and San Ángel), some of the buildings dating back to the 16th century.
So I ended up exploring Yucatan for three months, visiting gorgeous
colonial towns & cities; enjoying stunning beaches, cenotes and lagunas; and joining
other unique adventures like diving in cenotes, watching huge flocks of pink Flamingoes, floating in pink water salt flats and being smeared with white clay.
Mexico has something for everyone: beaches,
colonial towns, indigenous villages, handicrafts, pre-Hispanic archeological sites (think Maya, Aztec, Zapotec among
others), food, and of course the Spanish language.
Other magnetisms include the all - encompassing rhythmic atmosphere, dramatic landscapes of red - rock canyons and the architecturally - rich
colonial towns.
Other popular destinations along the route include the small
colonial town and island of Flores in the northern Peten region along with the Mayan Ruins of Tikal, Quetzaltenango (Xela) and Lanquin / Semuc Champey.
Other side trips include Mérida, capital of the neighboring state of Yucatán, smaller
colonial towns and the old henequen haciendas or estates.
