While nonfiction authors might be rightly concerned with traffic to their site (as a part of their platform — overall visibility and reach), novelists, poets, and
other creative writers should probably treat their site as a critical tool underpinning career - long
marketing and promotion efforts, but not necessarily as an end in itself — unless you're generating content, blogging, or doing something to attract attention, which we're about to discuss.

marketing and promoting your books as part of the whole
creative process — rather than look to what
other authors have done and try to imitate that for success (i.e. giveaways, FB ads, book marks and imprinted mugs)-- you are sure to find the perfect formula for success that works for you and your book.
It felt scandalous to me that as a journalist I could hear from publishing executives, analysts, commentators speaking to each
other... as if the authors weren't on the need - to - know list about a
market smoky with confusion and wholly dependent on the
creative essential produced by the absent authors.
One could reasonably argue there were TOO MANY publishers at the Bookfair when you think about the relatively small
markets they cater to for literary fiction, poetry, and
creative nonfiction, as well as the often myopic focus on a single magazine, ignoring or discounting
other ways they could serve their community while ensuring a sustainable future.
Authors like Emlyn Chand (of Novel Publicity) and Chuck Wendig have chosen the self - publishing route, and amongst
other things it offers a higher royalty percentage, an immediate route to
market and total
creative control.
Also, if an author has strong
marketing saavy, with the internet and
other mass media capabilities, the costs associated with reaching wide audiences can be quite reasonable if you are resourceful and
creative.
2018 Update: I often share book
marketing tactics or «hacks» without fully explaining my entire
creative ideology, which can lead people unfamiliar with my brand to confuse me with
other authors who are doing unscrupulous things.
