Previously, many water managers in the region had believed that the algae blooms of the
diatom Didymosphenia geminata — which resemble blobs of wet toilet paper or shag rugs — resulted from an invasive species problem starting in the mid-2000s that could be fixed by regular washing of fishing gear and
other sanitation measures.
Bacteria and
diatoms inhabit those liquid veins, and Hajo Eicken, a glaciologist at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, suspects that similar habitats could exist in the lower, warmer layers of ice on Europa, and perhaps on the
other moons as well.
Bacteria,
diatoms, and
other organisms spend their winters there, presumably subsisting on a bare minimum of nutrients.
The researchers also studied variables related to
other ocean plant groups, like
diatoms, which build glass shells that carry carbon to the deep sea, sequestering it from the atmosphere.
But he notes that
others have not seen as dramatic a decrease in copepod reproductive success during
diatom blooms elsewhere and warns that the Adriatic's heavy pollution may have enhanced the effect.
Then in 1997 and 1998, they and their colleagues sampled copepods in the Adriatic Sea during
diatom blooms in winter, when the copepods feast primarily on
diatoms, and during the summer, when
diatom numbers are down and copepods eat a more mixed diet that includes
other algae.
At the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Matthew Wooller and colleagues will analyze the mud for the remains of
diatoms, water fleas and
other tiny life to learn about the water temperature and clarity over time.
High - speed video revealed that the fish feed quite differently than
other gobies when they scrape
diatoms from the rocks, extending their top jaw way out and not pulling the lower jaw back as much as
other species do.
According to Ingall, removal of iron by
diatom - dominated phytoplankton communities may dampen the intended outcome of enhanced carbon uptake through iron fertilization by reducing the productivity of
other phytoplankton, which take up carbon dioxide more efficiently.
New

Diatoms may have
other advantages when it comes to oil production.
Neither are fungi,
diatoms, nematodes, tardigrades, slime moulds, algae or most
other species on the planet.
Don't miss great articles from
other sections, like «Water microbiome» where I would recommend an article deciphering the evolution and metabolism of an anammox bacterium by M. Strous and an article about globally overlooked nanoplanktonic
diatoms by K. Leblanc.
Fleas and
other insects with an exoskeleton (hard shell) are susceptible to the glass - sharp edges of the microscopic
diatoms.
These tiny green
diatoms generate nearly half of all the planet's primary production − that is, the food on which all
other diners must ultimately depend.
That alone may be unsatisfactory in that replacing the
diatoms with
other phytoplankon may wreck the relationship between phyto and zooplankton and create an entirely new ecology that may be unfavorable for sustaining the oceanic food chain.
Other proxies include ice cores, tree rings, and sediment cores (which include
diatoms, foraminifera, microbiota, pollen, and charcoal within the sediment and the sediment itself).
... INAS densities of some
other biological aerosols, like certain pollen grains, fungal spores and
diatoms, tend to be similar to those of dust.
A warm period around ad 1000 is in line with evidence from
other proxy indicators from northern Fennoscandia: Pine tree - limit (Shemesh et al. 2001; Helama et al. 2004b; Kulti et al. 2006), pollen and
diatoms (Korhola et al. 2000; Seppä and Birks 2002; Bigler et al. 2006) show indisputable evidence of a «Medieval Warm Period» that was warmer than the twentieth century climate.
