Smashwords also has some perks that make me wish the outfit had made more inroads into the
ebook market on its own merits (as a seller and not just a distributor), such as the ability to issue coupons, to offer affiliates a greater percentage of the sales price, and the fact that
authors receive a higher royalty rate there than at any of the
other stores.

I became intrigued by this topic when as an
author with two dozen e-books on Smashwords I read founder Mark Coker's «2013 Book Publishing Industry Predictions — Indie
Ebook Authors Take Charge,» Among
other things, Coker noted that «If Amazon could invent a system to replace the
author from the equation, they'd do that,» and went on to describe how one innovative publisher, ICON Group International has already patented a system that automatically generates non-fiction books, and he worries that as the field of artificial intelligence increases, «how long until novelists are disinter - mediated by machines.»
The sweet spot It seems to me, as pointed out by Catherine Ryan Howard and
others, that the sweet price for a novel published as an
ebook is currently $ 2.99; sweet as in a decent return for the
author, a cheap offer for the customer and not demeaning to the work.
And if you want to make that extra effort too, think about buying your
ebooks from
other sites — especially directly from publishers, if you have that opportunity, because that'll have the added bonus of making sure more money ultimately gets into the hands of your favorite
authors.
I believe the offer from Amazon is for
ebooks only, so how would a Hachette
author accepting Amazon's offer affect the
other versions of their book, i.e., hard cover and paperback?

ebooks purchases and take in 32 % of all
author income generated by
ebook sales.
Why would they give up all their
ebook revenue during negotiations when people might be buying the Hachette books from
other online retailers now and the
authors are getting their royalties from those sales?
Ebooks have none of those added costs, which is why they should be less regardless of the advance paid to the
author or
other expenses the publisher incurs in bringing a book to market.
