ecological deterioration accelerating and the nuclear
threat ever with us, we need to feel not acceptance but the challenge to join forces on the side of life, for while we, like all creatures, are ultimately part of a universe that is brutal and may well end, we have, while we live, a part to play different from that of any
other creature: we are responsible agents who can join with our loving parent to help our own and
other species to survive and flourish.

other hand, there are horrendous dangers of worldwide misery implicit in the
threat of nuclear war, extinction by
ecological disruption, the explosion of population, and the political problems of governing the world's peoples during a period of such momentous crises.
Without urgent action, we could face
threats to water, food, biodiversity and
other critical resources: these
threats risk intensifying economic,
ecological and social crises, creating the potential for a humanitarian emergency on a global scale.
