films, because they are just as important as the movies.

festivals and can not wait to get my eyeballs on this bloody, funny, and no doubt dazzling action comedy from a filmmaker like no

at the Hong Kong IFF, where I admired Yang Hen's third feature, Na pian hu shui (Lake August), and a couple of first features among
others, as well as attending the amazing HK
film market for the first time, where I saw one of my three 2014 «
films for the ages», Tsai's Journey to the West; and seeing a nitrate print of Hitchcock's Rebecca
at the George Eastman House in Rochester (where they are doing a three - day all - nitrate
festival in May, 2015!).

Out of the 52 prizewinners over the past 17 years of the Tiger Awards, 13
films went on to achieve significant visibility
at other festivals — and only seven of the filmmakers have become established directors (for the record: Zhang Yuan, Hong Sang - soo, Patrick Keiller, Lou Ye, Pablo Trapero, Kelly Reichardt — and Christopher Nolan).

other animated
films have ever been in contention
at the France - based
festival, both
films from DreamWorks Animation, Shrek and Shrek 2.
Having already played
at a number of
film festivals (most notably Cannes) and opening in
other countries prior to its U.S. release, reactions to the movie have been extremely positive, although it's still hard to tell whether it will appeal to a mainstream audience.
This is as true for this year's LA LA LAND and MOONLIGHT — two
films that were not on the Oscar radar before their world premieres
at the Venice and Telluride
film festivals just a few months ago — as it has been for so many
other lauded
films of the last six years.

other films in competition represented «promotions» for their directors, who had all had their previous outings featured in
other sections of the
festival, but the results were uneven
at best.

festival include Nicholas Hytner's adaptation of Alan Bennett's hit play The Lady in the Van, with Maggie Smith reprising her much - lauded performance as eccentric homeless woman who lived in Bennett's drive for 15 years.

at other film festivals as well, including
at Fantastic Fest.

Film Festival in Switzerland, and has played

The red carpet was rolled out in a corridor near the hotel's auditorium for a lengthy procession of luminaries from the region — filmmakers and actors whose
films were to unspool
at MEIFF, many unknown to me;
festival jurors, many who were known to me, and so on — as well as... Demi Moore, Freida Pinto and Hilary Swank, amongst
others shipped in to gratuitously increase the wattage of Opening Night.
She has also received international acclaim for this role
at leading
film festivals including Telluride, Toronto, London, Tribeca Doha and a host of
others.
The Young Victoria — The only
film we saw
at the
festival to get any kind of real theatrical release, which is unfortunate because while it's a fine
film for what it is, obviously I liked a lot of
other movies a lot more.
One of my
other favorite
films of the
festival, Nadine Labaki's powerful drama Capharnaüm, won the Jury Prize (essentially third prize) which is a relief
at least.
