Hopper's choice to have the actors singing during filming, rather than lip - synching to a pre-recorded soundtrack, gives such impact to the performances — even with his overuse of certain

Because her thinking man's Ilsa act in The Reader is at least conceptually riskier than her put - upon dishrag Debbie Downer in Revolutionary Road, we were that close to throwing her by the wayside in this category, especially because there's a clearly superior crypto - leading role in the mix (Rosemarie DeWitt, whose titular character in Rachel Getting Married has been shut out of a lot of races thus far, but we feel anyone who actually watches enough of the
film to justify throwing their vote toward frontrunner Anne Hathaway should have no
other choice but to recognize DeWitt's equally tricky, equally attention - stealing performance).
A couple
other questionable
choices were made such as needlessly showing the end of the
film at the beginning.
The performances are excellent throughout (Spacey and Irons are great, and Quinto continues to impress as a dramatic big - screen actor) and the
film looks great, but almost all the
other choices are nearly disastrous.
I can't say it's better than a third or fourth back - up
choice for a rental, but compared to the
other feeble father
films I've recently reviewed (Daddy Day Camp, The Game Plan), I'm positive you could do worse than this.
Coogler has made his case through these three
films to absolutely be a great
choice for him and might end up being the best
choice for the
film if the
other runner ups we've heard rumors about — Ava Duvernay, F. Gary Gray, Antoine Fuqua — and these are directors whose resumes include Selma (Duvernay), Straight Outta Compton (Gray), and Training Day (Fuqua).
