I was fine having a
gmail account and I used to use a lot of Googles
other services — when they weren't linked.
GMail, Exchange, and
other IMAP, and POP
accounts are easy to setup by Settings — >
Accounts & Sync.
My most used reading app is Reader for my RSS feeds, without a true
gmail app and
account sync I wasn't able to use Reader
other than in a browser, which is less than ideal, on top of the
other issues mentioned above, back to the store it went!

Seems that the last straw was a series of cyber attacks on Google and
others trying to steal proprietary information, and trying to read the
gmail accounts of human rights activists.
The attacker also apparently controls a computer called INSA - PC, because (a) the
GMail account of an individual infected by the attacker was accessed from the same IP address as INSA - PC, and (b) INSA - PC is located in between two
other addresses known to be associated with this attacker.
Using a
gmail account also gives you access to
other Google tools like Docs (now Drive), Reader, and Calendar.
