PITTSFIELD, MA — Mass Audubon's Berkshires Sanctuaries will be working this fall to improve habitat for bobolink and
other grassland birds in a field at its Canoe Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary in Pittsfield.

«We've identified Canoe Meadows as one of Mass Audubon's best opportunities for providing high quality
grassland habitat for
birds and
other wildlife,» said Berkshires Sanctuaries Director Becky Cushing.
«Although
birds in this study were shown to compensate by switching to
other seed types, the findings suggest that the capacity of grazed lands to support similar numbers of
birds as ungrazed lands may be compromised,» according to the Vermont Center for Ecostudies» Rosalind Renfrew, an expert on
grassland bird conservation who was not involved in the study.
The Guardian reports, «The dramatic decline in butterfly numbers indicates a wider loss of biodiversity, with
other insects such as bumblebees, hoverflies, spiders and moths, as well as many plants and
birds, disappearing along with the loss of traditional
grassland.»
