Surprisingly, the researchers did not find increased levels of Alzheimer's
markers when they looked
specifically at people with obstructive sleep apnea, a breathing disorder that's a major disruptor of sleep and a risk factor for several
other chronic diseases.
Specifically, associations with conventional cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic abnormalities (body mass index, waist circumference, waist / hip ratio, lipid status, glucose, blood pressure, heart rate and heart rate variability),
markers related to inflammation (C - reactive protein, cytokines and tumor necrosis factor - alpha) and
other stress hormones (adrenaline and noradrenaline) were studied.
