middle school I had been placed in an accelerated algebra
class with a dozen
other kids under the assumption that we would all be able to thrive in advanced courses designed for students two years our senior.
What about
other children —
middle -
class or upper -
middle -
class kids?
until THAT problem is addressed the problem of whether the
middle class kids or the poverty stricken
kids are creating problems for each
other is moot.
I wonder if it has ever occurred to the
middle class kids who are organizing these protests that while they have the luxury of saying no to school food, there are
other kids who rely on it for a substantial part of their daily nutrition, and who are being put in the unpleasant position of having to choose between being cool [by joining everyone else in the boycott] and being hungry?
On the
other side are educators who say a more competitive, focused and accountable education system will lift
kids out of poverty by giving them a ticket to college and the
middle class.
This California - centric volume contends that many
middle -
class families live under the illusion that their
kids» schools are swell and that it's only poor families whose children are trapped in bad schools and therefore need charters, vouchers, open enrollment plans, and
other policies and programs designed to afford them access to better options.
The fact that both
middle -
class black and white males —
kids from college - educated homes that should have strong moral values and be exposed to good parenting — are struggling in reading and
other aspects of academics should give personable responsibility myth believers pause.
The provincial teachers's association / union had managed to negotiate the disappearance / non-existence of giftedness, because it was unfair to
other less able students, a result of the 1960s / 1970s policy of radical education «motifs» in the universities that were very much in vogue, especially the idea that gifted
kids were simply the result of
middle -
class hot - house parenting.
From where they sit, simply requiring
kids of different backgrounds to attend the same schools, either by using and zoned schooling rules, or through supposedly more choice - oriented magnet schools (which restrict choice by setting quotas on what kind of
kids can attend, often to the advantage of
middle class families) Wil lead to higher levels of student achievement and foster greater understanding among each
other.
The people advocating the loudest for gifted - education programs are typically
middle -
class white and Asian parents seeking to maximize advantages for their
kids and
others like them — which renders the whole project suspect for many advocates of the disadvantaged.
Making the case that choice allows for all families, poor or
middle class, to meet the particular needs of their children can win support, especially from white
middle class families who realize that how they are hurt by school zones and
other Zip Code Education policies (and are also condescended by teachers and school leaders when they want more for their
kids), but don't see any
other way to avoid those problems beyond paying for private schools out their own pockets.
From the so - called gifted - and - talented programs that end up doing little to improve student achievement (and actually do more damage to all
kids by continuing the rationing of education at the heart of the education crisis), to the evidence that suburban districts are hardly the bastions of high - quality education they proclaim themselves to be (and often, serve
middle class white children as badly as those from poor and minority households), it is clear that the educational neglect and malpractice endemic within the nation's super-clusters of failure and mediocrity isn't just a problem for
other people's children.
This created a very distinct memory for me: I was living with my parents at the time but was slowly transitioning to that point
other middle -
class kids my age were, where you still live with your parents, but buy most of your own food, pay for your own gas, etc..
