Astronomers expect TESS to find about 20,000 planets in its first two years in operation, focusing on
nearby,
bright stars that will be easy for
other telescopes to investigate later.
They are the locations of
bright stars and
other nearby objects that get in the way of the observations of more distant galaxies and are hence masked out in these maps as no weak - lensing signal can be measured in these areas.
To astronomers in
other nearby galaxies it would be a visible as a
bright pink spot on the Sagittarius Arm.
I saw one huge,
bright dot, with three
other tiny pinpoints of light
nearby, all lined up in a row (just like the image at the top of this story).
The team also mapped out all the positions of the
brightest nearby cluster stars and was able to detect very small motions as the stars slowly revolved around each
other.
Many currently feature colors reminiscent of the tropical gardens and the ocean found
nearby, with sea foam greens and
bright and muted blues contrasted with clean whites, while
others have leopard accents and «jungle - like» touches in pillow and drapery fabrics.
