Cracking, bleeding or
any other nipple damage is not typical - something is causing the damage and pain, and a good IBCLC can help you to find the cause.

It can occur along with any cause of sore
nipples, is, in fact, probably a result of
damage, but it may also, on occasion, occur without any
other kind of
nipple pain at all.
Remember that if you are experiencing
nipple damage, slow weight gain, a baby who will not latch, or
other issues that require an exam or evaluation, you will need an individual consult to address your needs.
• Extent of any previous
damage to your chest / breasts /
nipples, for example, surgery, burn or
other injury.
The
other potential problem is actually causing
nipple damage like rub marks and cuts on the
nipple.
However, many
other mothers will start to warn you about the
damage breastfeeding can do to your
nipples and all of the pain you might endure.
Contributing to that are two
other things that are pretty common in new moms, and that is cracked,
damaged, abraded sore
nipples, because of course not only does that allow more entry of the bacteria into the breast, but it kind of creates a little collection pool where bacteria can hide and congregate on the
nipple.
