others: limited availability of space and the high price of urban land, proximity to large numbers of people (and thus a need for safe production methods), use of urban resources (

With
other waste - to - energy plants competing for feedstocks, a shift to more sustainable agriculture requiring more biomass returned to the soil, and (yeah, I am an optimist) an increasing realization that we can't keep
wasting food anyway, there will inevitably come a time when
organic «
waste» will be seen as an expensive, valuable resource.
It's far more effective to reduce the amount of food
waste that gets generated in the first place, and to have municipal, community, or neighborhood food
waste solutions managing the actual decomposition of the
organic matter, but that's a whole
other topic entirely.
The bigger picture is that food
waste is a huge issue, and sending food
waste (and yard
waste and
other organic materials) to landfills is a ridiculous practice which adds to methane emissions (20 % comes from landfills, according to the EPA).

For those of us on a more human time frame, the methane and
other gases emitted from decomposing
organic matter work just as well as the stuff you have to frack out of the ground... and, as you can see in the infographic below, create all sorts of opportunities to deal with
wastes more efficiently, and to even create a few jobs.
