In addition to the founding stories of the RA and PAFA, this exhibition recognizes the other artist - founders of PAFA, West's role as the teacher of eighteenth - and early - nineteenth - century American artists, and the development of monumental history paintings such as Christ Rejected and Death on the Pale Horse.

The works on view at Eleven Rivington have long since distanced themselves from this beginning, having appeared in an artist book, then haphazardly rearticulated through three - color process paintings (cyan, yellow, and magenta), scanned and digitally distributed on his and others tumblr pages, and presently re-photographed through a PDF generating application on his phone, the images from which provide the basis for this exhibition.

For the exhibition, Als, a critic at The New Yorker, selected paintings that portray African Americans, Latinos, and Asians, and other people of color — neighborhood children, fellow artists and progressives among whom the artist lived in Spanish Harlem and the Upper West Side.

Catherine Craft, in an exhibition review in The Burlington Magazine described a series of Almquist's paintings included in a solo exhibition in Munich: «Richly, almost hallucinogenically layered and spotted with fragments of yarn, paper towels and in one case two papier - mâché balloons, his Junky Fruit paintings suggested a lurid transformative decay capable of eliciting fevered visions of other worlds....»

Three additional rooms in the exhibition include other accounts of the Migration, including novels and poems by writers such as Langston Hughes, Claude McKay, and Richard Wright; photographs by Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn, Gordon Parks, and Robert McNeill; sociological tracts by Carter Woodson, Charles Johnson, Emmett Scott, and Walter White; and paintings by Charles Alston, Romare Bearden, and Charles White.

Other artists in the exhibition have painted portraits of renowned art world figures.

Although several sculptures employ crackle glaze and other nods to traditional pottery, the works in this exhibition are notable for the wide range of effects achieved with such contemporary materials as epoxy resin, catalyzed polyurethane, and high - gloss automotive paint mixed to the artist's specifications and applied with an airbrush.

As she prepared for that exhibition (opening September 9) and two other upcoming shows at the University Art Museum in Albany and Klemm's in Berlin, Ferris welcomed Artspace's Karen Rosenberg to her Bushwick studio to talk about her embrace of body art and what it means for her paintings.

Situating itself within current art historical and political debates, the exhibition considers work by self - taught, spiritually inspired and incarcerated artists, alongside other projects based in performance, socially engaged practice and the archive, as well as painting, drawing, sculpture and assemblage, that make insistent reference to place.

Also featured in the exhibition will be a series of paintings based on memorabilia from the American punk scene of the 1970 - 80s and other works that use early Modernism as a starting point to address topics such as fascism, sex and boredom, which the artist likens to «Suprematism on poppers.»
