The new findings are observational evidence supporting the idea that icy bodies are also present
in other planetary systems, and have survived throughout the history of the star's evolution.
By helping researchers determine how the one in our solar system formed and operates, the new data could give clues to
how other planetary systems evolved as well.
Astronomers have long wondered
whether other planetary systems have bodies with properties similar to those in the Kuiper belt, and the new study appears to confirm for the first time that one such body exists.
«One of the most startling discoveries
about other planetary systems has been that the most common type of planet out there has a mass between that of Earth and that of Neptune,» says Batygin.
Water delivery via asteroids or comets is likely taking place in
many other planetary systems, just as it happened on Earth, new research strongly suggests.
The scientists analyzed Kepler - 32 ′ s structure, compared it
with other planetary systems discovered by NASA's Kepler space telescope and sat down to do some math.
Looking for signals of this sort
around other planetary systems, they said, «could define a new strategy in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).»
«We imagined we were going to
find other planetary systems in our own image,» says Andrew Howard, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii.
«We want to characterize stars that are similar to our own solar system, because that's our best guess as to
what other planetary systems might have life.»
The team plans to use the same technique
on other planetary systems in the hope of teasing out some answers, but Winn and another of the paper's co-authors, astrophysicist Daniel Fabrycky of the University of California, Santa Cruz, already have a theory.
«We would like to know whether in
other planetary systems Kuiper belts exist with large quantities of water that could be added to otherwise dry planets,» he said.
Sen — One of the overarching goals of extrasolar planet detection is to find out
if other planetary systems look like our own Solar System, complete with small rocky planets, large gas giant planets, and hundreds of small moons.
«The idea that there is life to be found, including intelligent life, has been greatly supported since 1983 with the detection
of other planetary systems, an ocean on Europa, and clear evidence that there were once bodies of liquid on Mars,» he says.
Observations of the planets, satellites, and small bodies in the Solar system provide indispensable information about planet formation and evolution processes that remain unattainable
for other planetary systems.
«One of the most startling discoveries
about other planetary systems has been that the most common type of planet out there has a mass between that of Earth and that of Neptune,» said Batygin.
The new study suggests that the «hot Jupiter» WASP - 18b, a massive planet that orbits very close to its host star, has an unusual composition, and the formation of this world might have been quite different from that of Jupiter as well as gas giants
in other planetary systems.
We need not anthropocentrically imagine the evolutionary process to culminate in man, for it is quite conceivable that in time it might bypass man and the entire class of mammals to favor some very different species capable of a greater complexity than man can achieve; if not here on earth, then in
some other planetary system.
It is the first time a ring has been discovered around a trans - neptunian object, and it shows that the presence of rings could be much more common than was previously thought, in our Solar System as well as in
other planetary systems.
In terms of understanding more about the solar system's context in the rest of the universe, Batygin says that in a couple of ways, this ninth planet that seems like such an oddball to us would actually make our solar system more similar to
the other planetary systems that astronomers are finding around other stars.
The answers could tell a lot about the history of the solar system, about where to look for life in
other planetary systems, and even about the future of Earth.
«Even though we didn't set out to link anything we're doing at Mercury to
other planetary systems, that field has been advancing so quickly that Mercury has achieved another interesting importance,» says Sean Solomon, principal investigator for the Messenger mission.
This result meshes well with leading planet - formation theories and more conventional observations of
other planetary systems, and appears to refute the previous best guess from a competing team that estimated rogue Jupiters should be roughly twice as common as stars.
The measurements provide an unprecedented glimpse of the atmosphere of a relatively small planet; most worlds that have been located in
other planetary systems are behemoths more massive than Jupiter.
In our solar system, which has more planets — regardless of where one stands on the Pluto debate — than
any other planetary system we know of so far, the sun still makes up more than 99.8 percent of its system's mass.
Our Solar system, and
other planetary systems, began life with disks of gas and dust grains around a young star.
And so in the Kepler 11 system we have just a fantastic laboratory, better than
any other planetary system yet found, to look at the planets and compare them to one another to understand how these planets have evolved over time in kind of a contained system.»
One
other planetary system, encircling the star 55 Cnc, hosts five planets, but a six - world system would be unprecedented.
Thanks to data from a combination of space - and ground - based telescopes, we know more about TRAPPIST - 1 than
any other planetary system besides our solar system.
«If Earth obtained its water, nitrogen and carbon from the impact of such objects, then rocky planets in
other planetary systems could also obtain their water, nitrogen and carbon this way.»
And although the study focused on this particular star — known as WD 1425 +540 — the fact that its planetary system shares characteristics with our solar system strongly suggests that
other planetary systems would also. The researchers observed WD 1425 +540 with the Keck Telescope in 2008 and 2014, and with the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014.
«Its discoveries will help to place our own Solar System's architecture in the context of
other planetary systems,» he related.
Present - day study of
other planetary systems is so far limited to remote observation with telescopes, but future plans for exploration include the design and deployment of small robotic exploratory spacecraft toward other star systems.
«Because moons are numerous in our solar system, they are likely very common in
other planetary systems.
Understanding how our solar system compares with
the other planetary systems that we have discovered.
[116] Such icy bodies probably also reside in Oort clouds of
other planetary systems, when they are influenced gravitationally by either the gas giants or disruptions by passing nearby stars many of these icy bodies then travel starwards.
Starting in 2014 a US - led team will begin a GPI survey of up to 600 nearby stars, which will provide family portraits of dozens, if not hundreds of

The new findings support the notion that belts of icy bodies are also in
other planetary systems, and have persisted throughout their star's development.
