reform has been identified by both Democratic and Republican administrations and Congress as a key strategy in turning around the country's lowest performing schools, but this fact does not make NAS just like any
other education group in D.C. Instead, it means that after a great deal of review, comprehensive school
reform emerged as one of the country's best hopes for
public school improvement on a grand scale.

education reform's conventional wisdom - linked standards and assessments, consequences for poor performance, testing new teachers, paying some teachers more than
others, and charter schools - were given prominent
public voice by a teacher union leader, the late Albert Shanker of the American Federation of Teachers.

Yet not to confront the challenges of structure and governance in
public education in our time is to accept the glum fact that the most earnest of our
other «
reform» efforts can not gain enough traction to make a big dent in America's educational deficit, to produce a decent supply of quality alternatives to the traditional monopoly, or to defeat the adult interests that typically rule and benefit from that monopoly.
Instead of promoting a sophisticated student and teacher evaluation program, Malloy and
other proponents of the corporate
education reform agenda have been pushing a dangerous reliance on standardized testing as one of the state's primary mechanisms to judge and evaluate students, teachers and
public school.
(New York, NY)-- Hundreds of
public school parents joined
education reform organization StudentsFirstNY and
other advocates on the steps of City Hall today to urge new Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza to hit the reset button on Mayor Bill de Blasio's failing
education agenda.
What has become clear is that explicitly focusing on the educational concerns of poor and minority children regardless of where they live, and expanding that to the criminal justice
reform and
other the social issues that end up touching (and are touched by) American
public education, is critical, both in helping all children succeed as well as rallying long - terms support for the movement from the parents and communities that care for them.
Indeed, the reality of the matter is that both of California's teachers» organizations support Gavin Newsom because he has pledged to work with them rather than join the billionaire boys club behind corporate
education reform efforts and the unregulated spread of charter schools that will continue to drain funding from
other public schools and, if left unchecked, ultimately undermine
public education itself.

Other education reform bills passed Thursday by the Legislature would clear the way for data about student performance to be shared among Wisconsin colleges and universities and the state Department of
Public Instruction.
On the
other hand, the proposal will mean a whole lot of
education reform consultants will continue to feed at the
public trough.
