We would generally not be able to measure strontium or plutonium or
other radioactive elements if we could not detect cesium because these other elements would be present in such minute amounts that our instruments are not capable of detecting them.
For ores that contain even less concentrated uranium — McArthur River is the most concentrated active mine — the proportion of waste in radium and
other radioactive elements (as well as toxic heavy metals such as arsenic and mercury) is even higher — and McArthur River's uranium is much less concentrated than the mines of the past like nearby Rabbit Lake or Shinkolobwe in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Katanga Province.
Cobalt - 60 and many
other radioactive elements emit highly energetic gamma rays when they decay.
Since these elements exist only for a definite span of years, and all the uranium, radium, thorium and
other radioactive elements in the world today have not yet existed that many years, there was a time, prior to the duration of this span in the past, when these elements DID NOT EXIST!
Schwartz estimates the cobalt would take 53 years to return to non-dangerous levels, and that
other radioactive elements could persist for much longer.

In a new study, Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego Professor James Day and colleagues examined the chemical composition of zinc and
other volatile
elements contained in the green - colored glass, called trinitite, which were
radioactive materials formed under the extreme temperatures that resulted from the 1945 plutonium bomb explosion.

radioactive element thorium.
He found that the material was laced with
radioactive isotopes of phosphorus, cobalt, zinc, silver and
other elements, enough to provide raw material for a serious research programme.
The Hebrew University team of scientists have shown that these contradicting observations can be reconciled if the source of
radioactive plutonium (as well as
other rare
elements, such as gold and uranium) is in mergers of binary neutron stars.
The
radioactive ununpentium (a temporary name meaning «one - one - five») existed for only a fraction of a second before decaying into
other elements.
Thanks to this sample, the research team was able to calculate the amount of curium present in the early solar system and to compare it to the amount of
other heavy
radioactive elements such as iodine - 129 and plutonium - 244.
The machines handle the decaying
element's radiation better than human miners and can tolerate the radon gas released by the ore; early Navajo miners of uranium in the U.S. — and their families exposed to residual
radioactive dust and debris as well as contaminated water — developed lung cancer and
other ailments by the 1970s and 1980s.
And there are
other naturally occurring
radioactive elements in seawater as well, such as polonium.
The technique hinges on carbon - 14, a
radioactive isotope of the
element that, unlike
other more stable forms of carbon, decays away at a steady rate.
-- The Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency shall establish generally applicable environmental standards for the protection of the public and the general environment from
radioactive material released from facilities that use an advanced fuel recycling process, including facilities to fabricate fuel enriched with actinide
elements other than uranium.
