other sleep surface) that is too soft can be dangerous to infants.

Again, I call this «separate
surface cosleeping» and it works just fine and is better for families who do not breastfeed their infants, or if the mother smoked during her pregnancy, or if some
other adult
other than the father is in the bed, or if that adult
sleep partner is indifferent to the presence of the infant, or if older children are likely to come into bed with the baby.
Never allow the baby to
sleep in bed with
other children or adults, and do NOT put them to
sleep on
other surfaces, such as a sofa.
Extremely obese persons or
others who may have difficulty feeling where exactly or how close their infant is in relation to their own body, may wish to have the infant
sleep alongside but on a different
surface, such as a cosleeper attachment.
Persons taking sedatives, medications or drugs, or intoxicated from alcohol or
other substances, or otherwise excessively unable to arouse easily from
sleep should not cosleep on the same
surface with the infant.

sleeps on a firm mattress or

surface.
The absence of foam and stuffing found in
other crib mattresses, combined with the machine - washable
sleep surfaces, creates a hypoallergenic setting, thus significantly reducing the presence of excessive carcinogenic flame - retardants and eliminating the threat of dust mites and bed bugs.
At the last
sleep, more cases than controls were placed on their stomachs or sides, did not use a pacifier, were found with bedding or clothing covering the head,
slept on a soft
surface, and shared a bed with someone
other than a parent.

Sleeping on couches and armchairs places infants at extraordinarily high risk of infant death, including SIDS, 4,6,7,42,43 suffocation through entrapment or wedging between seat cushions, or overlay if another person is also sharing this

surface with another person.140 Because the term cosleeping can be misconstrued and does not precisely describe
sleep arrangements, the AAP recommends use of the terms «room - sharing» and «bed - sharing.»
If a portable crib / play yard or bassinet is to be used, it should meet the following CPSC guidelines: (1) sturdy bottom and wide base; (2) smooth
surfaces without protruding hardware; (3) legs with locks to prevent folding while in use; and (4) firm, snugly fitting mattress.121 In addition,
other AAP guidelines for safe
sleep, including supine positioning and avoidance of soft objects and loose bedding, should be followed.

If a cat likes to
sleep on window sills or
other narrow platforms, it is advisable to place a soft padded object on the ground underneath to prevent injury, as many older cats have impaired balance and could easily fall; ideally, elderly cats should be encouraged to use secure or wider
surfaces for
sleep.
The
sleeping surface isn't as plush or comfortable as
other beds on this list, however, so I don't recommend it for dogs with joint problems (an orthopedic bed is the better choice).
Even if you plan to allow your pet to
sleep on your bed or any
other soft
surfaces in your home, you need to set up a dry, warm place that is just for your cat.
