other, in the unwelcome number on the scale, in the sounding out of vowels during bedtime book reading, in the dust and stink and heat of a tent city in Port au Prince, in the beauty of a soccer game in the Haitian dust, in the listening to someone else's story, in the telling of my own brokenness, in the repentance, in the secret telling and the secret keeping, in the suffering and the mourning, in the late nights tending sick babies, in confronting fears, in the all of a life.
The ways we connect with each
other might be quite typical — Sunday morning services or school pick - ups or
bible studies at church or school or work or afternoon walks.
For starters, that kind of principle will inevitably mean that those who
study the
bible beliving in it will think it says something completely different than
others who read it.
No I have not «
studied» any
other religious books except the
bible, but I have casually looked at several.

study of the scriptures, but it NEVER says «Go ahead and

other religions have to offer because it will only give you stronger faith in the

bible over three times in my life, but I also have
studied many
other religions in my quest for truth.
It's topics like this that a lot of thorough
study of original context of the original documents are required, because there are lots of verses that suggest faith alone is required for salvation and
others that suggest that faith plus consistent good behavior are required and the
bible can't contradict itself if it's inspired by God.
After all these years of
study, of experience, of seeing
others change, and becoming a different person myself, my belief system has gone a long way from «because the
bible says so» to lets see everything the
bible has to say about it, what was going on then, who it was said to, and what it means in the context of life today.
I too get disgusted at those who claim the faith, never pray, never
study their
bible, never reach
others but speak with anger and hate because that is NOT our faith in Christ!
Others of my generation who had also grown up in legalism regarding or abstention from alcohol perhaps, and so were exploring their emancipation with micro-brews and homemade wine over thick theology books and
