waste reduction and organics diversion also represent significant opportunities to reduce emissions

from landfills.

The
waste feedstocks for the process will most likely come
from a mixture of sources ranging
from food scraps and
other household
material such as grass and tree cuttings, to agricultural and industrial
waste.
The bigger picture is that food
waste is a huge issue, and sending food
waste (and yard
waste and
other organic
materials) to landfills is a ridiculous practice which adds to methane emissions (20 % comes
from landfills, according to the EPA).
Typically, its journey begins at a
materials recovery facility where it gets separated
from other waste and types of recyclables.
There are
other obstacles as well, such as the facts that nuclear power plants take a long time and a lot of
material to build, release radioactive
material into the environment in «unplanned releases,» generate
waste which must be kept isolated
from the biosphere for as much as 10,000 years, and create more potential bomb
material cruising around the economy.
This approach can be extended to a complete industrial ecosystem, e.g. recycling «
waste» outputs
from industrial and agricultural processes as feedstock or energy inputs for
other industries and users - cascading and integrating to increase overall
materials and energy efficiency, and, where possible topping up with renewables to drive the system.
