in terms of selected abstractions, and if God feels the world

There is a troubling circularity involved
in such debates — the circularity
of defending your own point
of view from your own point
of view,
of defending your
values in terms of other values you also hold, but
others may not.

in terms of personal
values in relation to their involvement with the people to whom they ministered as persons.
In the past, it was a
term adopted by Christians and
other groups who recognised the inherent
value of human beings.
The problem,
in other words, goes deeper than the choice
of terms: a virtue can be relativized just as easily as a
value.
Does not this suggest that, by using the degree
of complexity as a guide, we may advance very much more surely than by following any
other lead as we seek to penetrate to the truth
of the world and to assess,
in terms of absolute
values, the relative importance, the place,
of all things?
The particular
value of this approach for a Christian theology
of religions is that it recognizes truth
in the convictions
of these
other traditions
in the
terms concretely stated arid believed by those within those traditions, and it recognizes their status as true alternatives to Christian faith.
So
in terms of wrongful action, religious people are vastly more likely to commit murder, mayhem, violence, and are more likely to attempt to «force» their religion and religious
values on
other people
in clear violation
of our laws.
In other terms, a structure has the
value of being a means to an end.
If Christians and
others with religious concern expect to contribute to this redefinition
of goals and
values, then they will have to go beyond expressing those goals and
values in terms of the traditional forms
of provincial and protected truths.
But the judgment
of destruction is always ambiguous; many
values only possible
in terms of the old order will never be realized, even though the destruction
of that order permits
other kinds
of value to emerge.
