The justification is based

other breeds, generally have a higher propensity to exhibit unique behavioral traits during an attack.

The organization's guiding principles are outlined clearly in their powerful statement

on why community breed bans (banning

pit bull: seeks out human interaction; is responsive, biddable and eager to please; may be genetically predisposed to aggression towards
other dogs or animals; is appropriately submissive; is well balanced and optimistic; enjoys handling; presents good eye contact; is able to be calm in the presence of
other dogs
on leash or — if initially leash reactive - can learn how to tolerate their presence; is willing to connect with handler during high arousal; can be handled safely even in times of high arousal; accepts a reasonable amount of confinement; drops arousal levels quickly when removed from a stressful situation; is social with people of all types; is responsive and good natured; is never aggressive towards humans.
The ordinance very much reflects the city and Skeldon's disproportionately high focus
on «
pit bulls» and ignoring all
other breeds when it comes to public safety — even though «
pit bulls» only make up about 7 % of the total dog bites in the Lucas County
In 2014 Animal Control began posting
Pit Bulls on our website, removed the «Not For Adoption» sticker from
Pit Bulls cage cards, began adopting out apparently friendly
Pit Bulls through our rescue partners and began allowing volunteers to interact socialize with
Pit Bulls upon arrival just like
other dogs.
Speranza, which means «hope» in Italian, is an all - breed rescue focusing
on Pit Bulls and
other Bully Breeds.
