It had plenty of laughs, but I got bounced
out again and again by
dumbed - down
characters and incredible plot twists.
So perhaps it's fitting that, at last, his coming -
out occurs in a movie filled with much bigger stars that requires this charming, nuanced performer to play the single
dumbest character of his life.
We get two unlikeable yet strangely appealing
characters and what follows is essentially how the
Dumb Waiter pans
out.
It was
dumb, but it could have chilled
out a bit on the non-stop subplots,
characters, and twists.

character is so poorly written that he comes across as flat -
out dumb in scene after scene (such as searching for a hidden camera in his silverware drawer).
The script isn't as smart as the previous film and has too many «
dumb character» moments if only because it would take some very questionable actions to have a virus break
out in the same place twice.
Wymark as the inspector is the central
character, who's the antithesis of Sherlock Holmes, trying to figure
out the perpetrator of the violent crimes more by hit and miss and
dumb luck than with logic and deduction.
There's a lot, yet still too little, made of a fake breast that Robert De Niro's
character has fashioned from his daughter's breast so that he can approximate breastfeeding (though the film balks at actually paying off the sight gag with the sight of him doing it) and a bit of unkindness towards southern policemen (Tim Blake Nelson, deserving better), and a good eighty - percent of the alleged humour of this stillbirth is invested in «Focker» sounding a lot like «Fucker» and people at a Focker family reunion having names like «Dom» which sounds like «
Dumb,» «Randy» which sounds like «Randy,» and «Horny» which sounds like someone's already run
out of ideas for how to stretch a one - word punchline into a feature - length film.
Mix in a few jump scares and smart
characters doing
dumb things, and suddenly what started
out feeling like a Cabin in the Woods - style deconstruction / celebration of found - footage horror becomes just another screamy mess.
