But several
of the most promising state charter school proposals already before the State Department
of Education would never see the light
of day if the
committee's proposed
budget cuts won
out.
Many
of the provisions were part
of Gov. Scott Walker's 2017 - 19
budget proposal, but were later stripped
out by the Joint Finance
Committee as non-fiscal policy items.
The version that passed
out of committee includes a $ 200 increase in per - pupil funding for public school students in the first year
of the
budget and $ 204 in 2018 - 19 to $ 654 per student in the final year
of the
budget.
But the
committee wants to know more, and has demanded that the government set
out its plans for the roll -
out of the website, including the «scope, timetable and
budget», and report back by June 2018 on the results
of the pilot.
The Opportunity Scholarships program, commonly referred to as the «school voucher program,» was enacted by the state last year when lawmakers inserted the language
of the program's bill, which never made it
out of committee, into the state
budget bill.
The chairmen
of House education
committees reached
out to school district superintendents last week to solicit suggestions for changes to HB 5105, the so - called «schools
of hope» legislation that is in play in the still - fluid
budget negotiations.
But, this week, with Horn's
committee meeting to grind
out the details
of the state's education
budget, the rhetoric meets the reality.
Along with the
budgeting process, HB 313 Charter School Funding Amendments passed
out of House Education
Committee this week.
In that role, Cameron was chairman
of the
