New York Health Commissioner Thomas Farley says that the previously - routine handing -
out of formula samples to the new mom «can impede the establishment of an adequate milk supply and undermine women's confidence in breastfeeding.»
Really it isn't even the actual handing
out of formula samples that is wrong.

I think the problem with
formula samples is that moms often turn to them in a moment
of desperation, rather than a thought
out decision to supplement.
I think that while there may be a small percentage
of «on the fence» women who might be swayed by a free
formula sample, the fact is that the majority
of women who aren't that interested in breastfeeding aren't going to stick it
out when the going gets tough anyway and the
formula companies can hardly be blamed for trying to grab up this segment.
Education during pregnancy rarely has anything serious to do with breastfeeding, and since breastfeeding is perceived by most pre-parenthood women to be a natural, instinctive thing instead
of a learned behavior (on both mom & baby's part) if it doesn't go absolutely perfectly from the first moments they may feel something is wrong with THEM and clam up about it while quietly giving the baby the hospital - offered bottle along with the bag
of formula samples they give
out «just in case» even if you explicitly tell them you're breastfeeding (which was my experience with my firstborn in 2004 and one
of the many highly informed reasons I chose to birth my next two at home).
But there have been many victories, as well - a substantial (and steadily growing) number
of «breastfeeding - friendly» hospitals have ceased to hand
out free
formula samples, and
formula manufacturers are required to print an advisory statement on their products explaining that breast is always best (but the
formula you've just bought is an excellent substitute!).
People will always argue in defense
of this practice, but a lot
of people see past that facade that
formula makers and doctors are giving away these
samples to help the parents
out.
Not sure if the hospital my son will be delivered in is one
of those «hide the
formula» ones or not, but I can assure you, I'll be asking for as many free
samples as I can talk them
out of parting with!
4 - Being given
formula samples is a not so subtle way
of saying «we know you won't really make it» or (even worse) «any «normal» mom gives
formula» — after all, the
formula samples come with diaper
samples which «everyone» needs for their baby too... I think hey should not hand them
out... or at the very least, hand
out a voucher.
We found that heavy «gift bags» containing multiple brands
of formula and coupons were being given
out in obstetrics offices, and large
sample cans
of formula were mysteriously showing up on mothers» doorsteps, often just before they gave birth.
Is the end
of free
formula samples in NYC hospitals pushy and intrusive activism, or just evening
out the playing field?
Should you allow
formula companies to exhibit, sponsor or hand
out promotional material and
samples your company will be in direct violation
of the International Code, a document that was designed to protect a mother's right to informed and unbiased feeding choices, and a baby's right to the highest attainable health.
This argument also seems to allow
formula companies and health professionals to pass
out formula company literature and free
samples of formula to pregnant women and new mothers without pangs
of guilt, despite the fact that it has been well demonstrated that this literature and the free
samples decrease the rate and duration
of breastfeeding.
