While guarding against a rush to judgment, we can easily think
of ministries that are pushing all or many
of the current success buttons: they are carried
out by a professional elite; they utilize the best marketing and media techniques; they dispense a personal fulfillment strategy to essentially anonymous folk who are regarded as consumers and called to respond
in carefully prescribed ways which do not implicate them or their leadership
in the more complex and controversial human issues.
It is not sufficient, however, to point
out that there are innumerable
ministries in the several Christian communities that insist on the objectivity
of truth, the authority
of Scripture and Spirit - guided interpretation, the ecclesial means
of grace, and the reality
of moral good and evil.
Moreover
in this strange order
of things I am confronted with a personal God who not only called Abram
out of Ur, but is clearly seeking me
in the
ministry of Jesus Christ.
Then, after administrative costs and overhead are deducted
out of the money that comes
in, a team
of people goes
out to perform the
ministry to the massive group whose «need» is trying to be met.
Such movement is obviously
out of step with the broader church interest
in discovering and defining a
ministry to and with the poor.
Let him do well what he normally does
in the common life, and this will be the principal indication
of his hearing God's particular call to him, and
of carrying
out his particular

of relationships
in church turn
out to be «
ministry based» — i.e., without the structures
of ministry, there really isn't much
of a meaningful relationship.

To take any one
of the basic elements

of the
ministry, therefore, as exclusive, or to lift it

of holistic mission would be spelled
out as the journey
of CWM as a partnership
of churches
in mission continued.
