Thanks for all
of the hard work you put in

Lunch Tray, Bettina — and especially thanks for continuing to work so hard even while
school is
out and your kids are
on vacation.
So if something is bugging you about kids and food — whether it's the unnecessary «refueling» with Oreos at the 10 am soccer match, the prevalence
of highly processed food
on your child's
lunch tray, or the Sunday
school teacher who hands
out candy for good behavior — speak up and get involved.
I think it is important to point
out that this isn't just an issue for middle class families who care deeply about their child's diet and are able to provide abundant healthy food choices but
school menus have great impact
on many, many poor children who, through no fault
of their own and often with no agency to change the situation, end up being pawns in the
lunch tray wars.
While I believe all the issues
on The
Lunch Tray are worthy
of discussion (even if some are a little sillier than others), and even though we've certainly discussed childhood hunger here and will continue to do so, any site claiming to be dedicated to «kids and food, in
school and
out» really ought to take affirmative steps to help kids with no food at all.
We have friends whose kids are going to the public kindergarten (only 1/2 day) with the «wraparound» enrichment program for the rest
of the day; their little ones are already stressed
out because they have just 2.75 hours in
school, during which they're basically being trampled
on with mountains
of «instruction,» and the wraparound program gives just 20 minutes for
lunch while foregoing rest time in favor
of «reading instruction» and «homework help.»
My son missed
lunch on the first day
of school this year (9th grade) because
of the crowds but wanted to buy
lunch this week as now he's «figured
out» how to get to the
lunch line in time.

You say that
school lunches provide only 5
out of 21 meals that kids get
on a weekly basis.
But given that the National
School Lunch Program already IS the ultimate nanny state program — a daily, free or reduced price hand -
out of food, administered by the federal government — why is merely improving the food served so controversial
on the right?
Turns
out that even in a locavore, agricultural state like Vermont, it still takes a lot
of work — and creativity — to change what's served
on school lunch trays.
My feeling about milk in
schools, as shared by many TLT readers (judging from this morning's discussion
on the Facebook page and in comments
on the blog), is that milk does have a place
on lunch trays, but not to the exclusion
of other beverages like water (which, as it turns
out, is not so easy to get into cafeterias) and plant - based milks for those who drink them.
Next week, my
school will host a public screening
of the new documentary
Lunch Line, which follows six Chicago kids from disadvantaged neighborhoods as they as they set
out on a mission to fix
school lunches — ending up at the White House.
When we prepare kids for the first day
of kindergarten and help them pick

All
schools should plan to eat
lunch on the premises; however, if your
school would like to opt
out of having
lunch at Boerner, the
school must notify the Learning Journeys planning assistant in the email confirming the assigned Learning Journey date.
For a district qualifying under this paragraph whose charter
school tuition payments exceed 9 per cent
of the
school district's net
school spending, the board shall only approve an application for the establishment
of a commonwealth charter
school if an applicant, or a provider with which an applicant proposes to contract, has a record
of operating at least 1
school or similar program that demonstrates academic success and organizational viability and serves student populations similar to those the proposed
school seeks to serve, from the following categories
of students, those: (i) eligible for free
lunch; (ii) eligible for reduced price
lunch; (iii) that require special education; (iv) limited English - proficient
of similar language proficiency level as measured by the Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment examination; (v) sub-proficient, which shall mean students who have scored in the «needs improvement», «warning» or «failing» categories
on the mathematics or English language arts exams

of the past 3 years or as defined by the department using a similar measurement; (vi) who are designated as at risk

of students.
