Sobering the proceedings is a look back to
last Sundance, where The Big Sick went on to gross nearly $ 40 million
last year, and Wind River right behind it at $ 34 million to be the top - grossing prestige films
of 2017, with both coming
out of this
festival.
If you're not lucky enough to be at South by Southwest film
festival this week, then you're missing
out on the world premiere
of the new Star Wars: The
Last Jedi production documentary The Director and the Jedi.
After I saw it at the Toronto film
festival last September — where Rudolph and Willis said they were proud
of having made it even if nobody saw it — it received nominal runs in New York and Los Angeles, cities where viewers and critics are regarded by distributors as being more demographically significant than those in Chicago, and then early this year it came
out on video.
The
festival has hosted five
of the
last six Best Picture Oscar winners, rolling
out the red carpet for A-list actors and filmmakers while heavily supporting local filmmakers as well.
Not necessarily who we'd have given the prizes to in all cases (as is often the case, many
of our own favorites were
out of competition, or in sidebars), but it's a diverse collection
of winners that reflect a
festival that may not have had the heavy hitters
of last year, where Paul Thomas Anderson and Terrence Malick headlined the competition, but reflected a line - up that had real breadth
of excellence.
When I went to see «Frances Ha»
last week I somehow managed to avoid all trailers but had high hopes based on the word
of mouth
out of the Edinburgh
festival and I have two Noah Baumbach films in my top thirty movies
of all time.
Sony Pictures Classics picked up writer - director Chloé Zhao's
festival favorite The Rider
out of last year's Cannes Film
Festival in a late - night deal following its first screening.
After the parallel triumphs
of two small, daring and very different
festival hits, Moonlight and Get
Out (
last Sundance's surprise midnight premiere), the answer is: anything.
Yet again, the
festival will not evade criticism for its historically gender - imbalanced selection, with only three films in the 2016 competition slate directed by women (one more than
last year), two in the Un Certain Regard sidebar (the lowest since 2012), and one
Out of Competition.

of the most touching documentaries to come

Last week, noting the lack
of festival buzz coming
out of Utah, I did a highly unscientific Twitter survey, asking my Sundance - attending followers what the hot titles were.
The film would be a prime candidate for any distributor looking to bolster its awards season slate, as Fox Searchlight did
last year when it acquired Pablo Larraín's «Jackie»
out of the
festival, and went on to earn an Oscar nomination for star Natalie Portman.
There are a bunch
of movies I'd like to see coming
out of Sundance, but the main ones are definitely «Take Shelter,» «Like Crazy» (mostly because I've been in love with Felicity Jones since seeing her in an adaptation
of Northanger Abbey some years ago), «Martha Marcy May Marlene,» «Submarine» (yes, I know it was at other
festivals first), and «The Future,» even though I didn't care for July's
last effort.
Then
last week, surprisingly, early word
out of the Telluride film
festival for his latest feature, Frances Ha, was unanimously positive.
-- Bob [LIKED] It is more a function
of «end
of festival» burn
out, as this was the
last film
of a long week.
The competition always dominates headlines at Cannes — especially this year's edition, which conspicuously lacks any
out -
of - competition studio blockbusters like «Mad Max: Fury Road» in 2015 or «The BFG»
last year — but with some luck and discernment, it almost always pays to venture down some
of the
festival's less obvious avenues.
Directed by Jim Field Smith, who also made the underrated rom - com «She's
Out of My League,» «Butter» played the
festival circuit at the end
of last year, but the Weinstein Co. hasn't shown a lot
of confidence in the movie by dumping it in October.
Hailing the film as «brilliant,» the
festival chose James's movie
out of the ten documentaries screened, adding another accolade to the picture's remarkable streak
of worldwide acclaim, which has
lasted since its January debut at Sundance.
The much - commented - on lapse in judgment that relegated Kelly Reichardt's Old Joy to the Frontier section
last year affected its reception, not only because Frontier is a catch - all category for films that are regarded as too far -
out for the majority
of Sundancers, but more concretely, because Frontier films screen at the
festival's lesser venues.
I'm convinced that there's already a latent melancholy in the picture, but armed with just a gloss
of Camp David, the Israeli / Egyptian conflict, suddenly all
of the picture's travails — being shut
out of the Cairo film
festival and, at the
last minute, the Abu Dhabi fest as well — take on this terrible weight
of irony and hopelessness.
It was my
last film
of the
festival, on the morning
of the day I was flying home, and it turns
out to have been my favorite one.

festival was terribly windy, a nice crowd turned
out to ask questions
of these two YA authors and listen to them read.

of participating artists that wouldn't look
out of place in a medium - sized international biennale (among them Allora & Calzadilla, Cecilia Bengolea, Michaël Borremans, Christoph Büchel and Douglas Gordon).

festival marked by fasting and abstinence.
