Before Thanksgiving, I took my daughter to the kitchen shop and let her pick
out new
holiday cookie cutters and jars
of festive sprinkles (she wanted all the jars!).
And in this edition
of my
holiday cookie countdown, we're trying something I haven't made in years — Cut -
out cookies!
The addition
of walnuts makes these
holiday cookies stand
out from the pack.
I expect to make a few more batches
of these through the fall and then the
holiday season — not just to give
out as gifts, but to keep around the house as well, in the hopes that if I have them around snack on I'll be less inclined to consume my supply
of Halloween candy or
holiday gifting
cookies.

I don't make them very often (unless it's in a small batch) because I have no self - control around them, but all
of that goes
out the window during the
holidays because
cookies are great for gifting.
Whether it's a plate
of family favorites for the office or five dozen for the annual Cookie Swap, it's time to crank
out the
holiday cookies for gift giving, or just a plate for ol' Saint Nick, and put my dear old KitchenAid mixer to the test.
I personally think there are many other little
holiday gift ideas that are more exciting — and more original — than
cookies, and since I like to play by my own rules here's some
of what I will be giving
out this year...
Along with millions
of other
holidays bakers this time
of year, I inevitably end up cranking
out a few dozen gingerbread
cookies.
Baking
holiday cookies can go from a labor
of love to an exercise in frustration when your gingerbread men come
out more bloated than a Macy's parade float.
And I think the
cookies I am sharing today are good way to easy yourself
out of the decadence
of the
holidays and back into sweet treats and snacks that you can feel good about making / eating!
To me, the essence
of the
holidays is captured through cut -
out ginger
cookies.
I was just talking with a friend about trying to find a good Gingerbread recipe to try for the
holidays:) Just
out of curiosity is it possible to bake these
cookies into large flat squares and use them to make gingerbread houses?
Out of all the
cookies I made during the
holiday season, this was my favorite.
But it's definitely that time
of the year — when the weather gets a tad bit nippy (ok, or cold), the
holiday decorations are
out in full force, and my thoughts turn to dreams
of chocolate and
cookies and pastry and everything that's not necessarily good for me but keeps me going through the winter months.
And»cause these crunchy
cookies pair two
of our favorite
holiday flavors, they're great to give
out as gifts too!
Granted, these are lumpy, bumpy, odd little things that would be
out of place on a
