The critics who came
out of its first screenings in December 2004 realized the Oscar
race had been rewritten while the
movie was playing.
But if they don't — if any of these powerful
movies about women get snubbed for best picture, or the women that anchor them get left
out of the best - actress
race in favor of films that won't make a dent in any other category (I see you, Victoria & Abdul)-- it might be time for a serious intervention.
We know the
movie affirms its sense of humor when it opens with a muscle car
racing out of a firey gate from Hell, all while the narrator utters a twelve letter word twice
out of his trap.
The Oscars
race so far is considered wide open, and by winnowing the field down to five
movies for its top award on Wednesday, the Screen Actors left
out many frontrunners.
Though it came
out at Sundance, then skipped Telluride, Brooklyn's screening at the New York Film Festival sent the quietly «off the radar»
movie headlong into the Oscar
race.

While «Hidden Figures» and «Loving» offer more inspirational looks at
race relations, «Get
Out» is the
movie that delivers hard truths that we all need to hear, in a manner that makes us squirm more ways than one.
It's clear, then, that the script's sitcom - level approach to the subject matter fares much better than one might've anticipated, although there's no denying that, at a ludicrously overlong running time of 110 minutes, How to Be Single does peter
out to an increasingly palpable degree as it progresses - with, especially, the
movie's final third relying far too heavily on hackneyed sequences that are either egregiously padded -
out or completely needless (eg a character frantically
races to the hospital).
And while the
movie's first trailer before its Cannes debut painted it as a moody tragedy, this new one filled with critics» raves better captures the propulsive, neon - lit energy of what you'll experience for 99 minutes — as Pattinson's bank - robber character
races through one desperate night trying to get his mentally disabled brother (Benny Safdie)
out of jail, bloodying a lot of faces and ruining a lot of lives along the way.
If «Moonlight,» an indie film about a gay black man growing up in impoverished Miami, a
movie made for $ 1.5 million, could win best picture, then why not «Get
Out,» a social thriller examining
race?
