image of a woman who is battered for 20 years by her clergyman husband and who would forgive him, «because the Bible tells her to,» the
image of a young mother and father who can not understand why their three - year - old daughter was sexually abused in the day care center to which they had entrusted her each morning; the
image of a woman who was sacked
from the women's program
of her church because she refused to comply to the request
of the president
of the church that she and the other women vote for him in his election campaign; the
image of a 14 - year - old migrant domestic worker who faces the death sentence on trumped up charges, because she would not give in to the sexual demands
of her employer; the
image of a male priest
of a church saying that every time he beats his wife she should thank him, because she is one step closer to salvation; or the priest who would make sexual advances on a woman who
out of vulnerability turns to the church for pastoral comfort... these are but a glimpse
of the many such
images that are gathered during the course
of this Decade.
All
of these considerations do not change the fact that for a long time American society has been organized around the
image of the successful white Anglo - Saxon man, nor assuage the bitterness
of those excluded
from the central rewards
of the society because
of the fact
of sex or race or age.22 Plato long ago pointed
out that the tyrant who can gratify every whim is the greatest slave
of all, because he is completely at the mercy
of his own desires, but he did not mean that argument as an excuse for tyrants.
That
image in the window, in its various versions, is probably the most familiar representation
of the Good Shepherd, the one who, in the words
of Ezekiel, will seek
out the lost, bring them back
from the darkness and lead them to good pastures.
It would be difficult to say whether our culture's stress on aggressiveness grew
out of an overemphasis on God's power and might or whether the
images of God's power and might emerged
from a society that valued such strength.
Obviously our cultural situation has already been shaped by

from what Christians would call revelation, and our concrete questions arise
out of a context that has been deeply influenced by biblical motifs.

Can we distinguish the
images of hope that biblical religion suggests to us,
from the frothy fantasies that arise all too easily
out of what Freud called the «pleasure principle?»
Hence, by its challenge to our favored
images of God, especially those that present God as one whose favor we must win by our religious or ethical performances, the subversive, revelatory
image of a God who participates in our own shame pulls the rug
out from under a society that seeks by way
of religion to legitimate its exclusivism.
God continually and universally acts to shape many varied
images of his own being
out of what stands at the greatest remove
from himself, without compromising the freedom
of the creatures to build their own self - generated response to their vision
of perfection.
Reading all
of these people's comments gives one an
image of a great tide
of humanity washing in and
out of an institution that does not have the rigid membership boundaries often perceived by church leaders who look at the church
from the inside
out (and who are responsible for keeping the statistics).
If only the church's conventional
image is changed
from a self - centered, indifferent institution to that
of a deeply concerned observer
of public affairs — by simply being in the places where policy is being hammered
out — this alone is warrant for deployment in the structures
of the community,
I borrow my title
from Harvey Cox's well known The Secular City, the aim
of which was to map
out and defend the relevance
of religion for «the post-literate man
of the electronic
image» (TSC 11) whose urban, technological culture seemed to many so inhospitable for such an endeavor.
Micah, the Ephraimite, had an

There is an infinite number
of ways
of approaching that complex indirectly, and probably no way
of approaching it directly this side
of heaven; the New Testament

from calling everything that is merely hopeful or positive «Christian,» and to make it clear that such phenomena as racism and Manichaeism are definitely

I find it to be very difficult to sort
out (perhaps even impossible really) what is genuine teaching
of Jesus and what is obscured by the carefully crafted
image (various
images of course
from various factions)
of Him presented by the church.
Surely if there was a «Land
of Chocolate», Germany would be it (insert mental
image from The Simpsons episode where Homer frolics around an imaginary German land made entirely
out of chocolate here).
However life (social and otherwise) reared its head once again and somewhere between working
out how to make my computer see the
