Future resources from the NCI Center for Cancer Genomics (CCG), which oversees TCGA and other activities, will support more translationally focused research, including databases with genomic information on clinical samples linked to
outcomes of their patient donors.
Historically, clinicians evaluating a
patient for transplant have sought to identify
donor cells that are perfectly matched to the
patient's cell type, which is considered to be the optimal approach to help ensure successful
outcomes and to minimize risk
of graft - versus - host disease (GVHD), a serious and potentially life - threatening complication that occurs when the donated immune cells attack the
patient's cells as foreign tissue.
While we know that other
donor characteristics can influence the risk
of the
patient developing Graft versus Host disease or other complications, more research is needed to determine how important different
donor factors are on
outcomes other than
patient survival.»
