The breed was further developed by
outcrosses with American Shorthair cats.
Outcrosses with other shorthaired breeds have been allowed to increase the gene pool.
The first is
the outcross them with a more structurally sound breed or breeds.

Plott kept his strain exclusively pure
with no
outcrosses.
Kirlee, as a supposed distantly related cat
with the same spontaneous genetic mutation, would be a good
outcross.
This could be because the Exotic was
outcrossed much more frequently
with the Persian than the Shorthair in later years.
In the miniature schnauzer, a swallowing condition is inherited but appears to be complex
with some, but fewer, affected offspring from
