Part of that is due to the inherent reflectivity of an LCD panel, but the Essential Phone also doesn't have any sort of
outdoor display mode like the Galaxy S8, LG G6, U11 or Xperia XZ Premium, which pushes those phones over 550 or even 600 nits in harsh sun situations.

They added a row of quick settings to toggle, like a shortcut to toggle the
outdoor mode which lets you crank up the
display brightness.
The colors are vibrant and you'll have no trouble reading the
display in the sunlight when its in
outdoor mode.

mode, so there's no downside.
It also has some battery - saving properties, because of the way it switches to reflective
display mode when you're
outdoors rather than using backlighting.
All of which compounds the G Watch's
display visibility issues, as you're forced to manually switch brightness
modes when moving indoors or
outdoors.
There's also a Sunlight
Display mode that selectively boosts contrast and brightness, allowing you to view the screen while
outdoors.
The
display also supports various
modes, like sRGB standard
mode for balanced colours, DCI - P3 for more vibrant colours and Sunlight
mode for
outdoor use.
The AMOLED
display is big and seriously bright, but in direct sunlight it can get a little washed out, although there's an
outdoor mode that can be triggered for a few minutes at a time.
This is one of the finest
displays available in a phone today, with excellent color saturation, remarkable contrast, and one of the brightest
outdoor viewing
modes around.
All of the screen options that OnePlus has been working on coalesce in the OnePlus 5T, which now also offers a Sunlight
Display mode for better
outdoors visibility.
The colours are very punchy and there's plenty of brightness so you'll be able to see the
display even in sunny conditions, with an
outdoor mode if you need it.
