If the chalk painted piece will be a highly used piece, I add poly
over the waxed finish.
I do not agree with your assessment of not being able to paint
over a waxed finish.
Attempting to add another coating — such as Chalk Paint ® Lacquer or another varnish or even polyurethane —
over a wax finish is futile.

Jan, I have tried many products to use
over chalk paint, several
waxes then I switched to polycrylic top coats and have tried several, the best I've ever used is Polyvine Decorator's Varnish Dead Flat
Finish — it DOES NOT yellow, I just used
over two big pieces of furniture painted in Pure White and Off White and absolutely no yellowing.
It was easy for me to see how much
wax was removed because I had put dark
wax over the clear then
finished with another coat of clear
wax.
After I
waxed with Annie Sloan soft
wax I applied General
Finishes flat topcoat
over the chalk paint on the rungs of the chairs.

over more intricate drawing and painting in oil separated by clear

If you want your kitchen cabinets to be a semi-gloss
finish and use chalk paint, you will need to
wax them or add a semi-gloss poly

Roman Beeswax Polish is an excellent
wax for use
over Milk Paint or varnish and shellac

finish like varnish, it can be layers of furniture
wax or polish that have been applied to a piece
over the years, it can be oils from handling (or from cooking in the case of kitchen cabinets), or it can be old oil based or latex paint.

It is a little more work having to
wax over it, but that is what makes the
finish look so good.
I have found the paste
wax looks beautiful when used
over painted surfaces and not just flat
finish chalk painted surfaces.
When you apply the soft
wax over the dried chalk paint, the patina will come out in the
finish.
