over 100 years (and its more than 80 times more powerful

Carozza et al (2011) find that natural
global warming occurred in 2 stages: First,
global warming of 3 ° to 9 ° C accompanied by a large bolus of organic carbon released to the atmosphere through the burning of terrestrial biomass (Kurtz et al, 2003)
over approximately a 50 - year period; second, a catastrophic release of methane hydrate
from sediment, followed by the oxidation of a part of this methane gas in the water column and the escape of the remaining CH4 to the atmosphere
over a 50 - year period.

over the course of his career than any other science writer, starting with a 6,000 - word cover story on
global warming in Discover Magazine in 1988 that opened with his Senate testimony and continuing through the period when political appointees at NASA tried to stop him
from speaking out.
Given how much yelling takes place on the Internet, talk radio, and elsewhere

global warming, I wanted to find out whether anyone had generated a decent decades - long graph of
global temperature trends accounting for, and erasing, the short - term up - and - down flickers
from the cyclical shift in the tropical Pacific Ocean known as the El Niño — Southern Oscillation, or ENSO, cycle.
Since the CMIP5 models used by the IPCC on average adequately reproduce observed
global warming in the last two and a half decades of the 20th century without any contribution
from multidecadal ocean variability, it follows that those models (whose mean TCR is slightly

The one slightly fortuitous aspect to this is that the forcing
from CO2 alone is around 1.5 W / m2, while if you add up all of the forcings, including
warming factors (like CO2 and CH4) and cooling factors (like aerosols), you end up with a total around 1.6 W / m2 — i.e. all of the extra stuff we've put in
over the years pretty much cancels out in the
global mean.

If CO2 in the Anthropocene atmosphere contributes to re-vegetating currently arid areas as it did post-LGM, we should expect an even greater
warming feedback
from CO2 than is assumed
from water vapor and albedo feedbacks, due to decreased
global dust - induced albedo and increased water vapor
from transpiration
over increased vegetated area.

(1) One is the ice sheet and glacier mechanical collapse, which doesn't require a whole lot more
warming, but will happen with some set minimum amount of
warming over some time period; and (2) the other is
global warming that keeps increasing beyond the level needed to cause # 1, which among other things will perhaps lead to positive carbon feedbacks (e.g.,
from melting permafrost and hydrates).
