As I look out
over the current school reform landscape I see it is categorized by policies that seek to standardize, homogenize, and corporatize
public education through the use of one - size - fits - all curriculum
standards, high stakes testing, micro-management of school operations from distal bureaucrats, teacher evaluation policies based on mis - interpretations of current research, and heavy reliance on corporate
education providers camouflaged as non-profits operating via charter schools.
The empirical evidence simply does not support the use of one - size - fits - all curriculum
standards and high stakes testing as effective tools to improve the
education and life outcomes of
over 56 million
public school students in the third most populous country on the planet.
A lot of change has happened in California
public education over the last decade, from
standards - based instruction to funding formulas to local control and accountability to scorecards and systems of support.
But even if it is not end goal of the Common Core State
Standards to invade students» privacy or impose curricular directives, there is a question of how to implement the new
standards when North Carolina's
public education system will continue to face dwindling resources
over the next two years, at least.
Despite strong support for the Common Core from the state's business community, some conservative critics wildly claim the higher
standards are a federal plot to take
over public education.
WHEREAS, the Utah State Board of
Education engaged in
public discussions, meetings, and information gathering activities regarding the Common Core State
Standards throughout the state
over a period of approximately 14 months and additionally, discussed the proposed
standards regularly in publicly noticed and broadcasted Board meetings; and
California is focusing on improving
public education with a bold two-fold strategy: rebuilding the capacity and local decision - making power of its about 1,000 school districts with LCFF and implementing the new Common Core
standards over this school year and next.
It's not like it is difficult to find startling hypocrisy in what passes for
public policy debates these days, but the battle
over public education seems especially rife with maddening examples, most of them around the notion of accountability, that teachers and schools should be held to high
standards and measurable results for the
public dollars they use.
The lawsuit — which was filed in 2011 and became the longest legal battle
over school finance in state history — was brought against the state after the Legislature cut $ 5.4 billion in
public education funding from the state budget while schools were already struggling to implement new academic
standards.
There is very little doubt among sophisticated observers that Texas has led the nation in
public education reform
over the past decade or so and that it has served as a model for the nation in the advancement of
standards and accountability.
Regardless of the qualifications one might add to this number, this represents the continuation of an increasing trend in graduation rates
over the past 20 years of
standards and accountability based reform in Texas
public education, and we should applaud educators across the state for this achievement.

standards and accountability.
Yet, there is a perception that the federal government has «taken
over»
public schools due to the implementation of new teacher evaluation models, Common Core
standards and new methods of testing, said Max Marchitello, policy analyst for pre-K-12
education policy at the Center for American Progress.
As we demonstrated in our 2015 analysis of the Common Core debate on Twitter, the dispute about the
standards was largely a proxy war
over other politically - charged issues, including opposition to a federal role in
education, which many believe should be the domain of state and local
education policy; a fear that the Common Core could become a gateway for access to data on children that might be used for exploitive purposes rather than to inform educational improvement; a source for the proliferation of testing which has come to oppressively dominate
education; a way for business interests to exploit
public education for private gain; or a belief that an emphasis on
standards reform distracts from the deeper underlying causes of low educational performance, which include poverty and social inequity.
The Common Core's call for coherent, content - based math and literacy
standards threatens to undo the watered - down version of progressive
education thinking that has dominated the
public schools
over the past half - century.
