The reversal
in the
overall trend is, however, driven wholly by an
improvement in the rigor of reading assessments, which set expectations that are higher by 0.49 standard deviations
in 4th
grade and by 0.26 standard deviations
in 8th
grade.

Duke points to research by Goodwin and Ahn (2013) that argues that instruction
in morphemes leads to
improvements in word decoding, spelling, and vocabulary; and because word decoding and vocabulary contribute to reading comprehension, there is evidence that morphology instruction leads to
improvement in reading comprehension and
overall reading achievement (Goodwin & Ahn, 2010; Goodwin, Lipsky, & Ahn, 2012), even
in the elementary
grades (Rasinski, Padak, Newton, & Newton, 2013), and even for children who struggle
in learning to read (Goodwin & Ahn, 2010; Nagy, Carlisle, & Goodwin, 2013).
The
overall performance of students
in the 4th, 8th and 12th
grades clearly indicates that there is room for significant
improvement.
Following test scores from year to year
in the same
grade, the study finds that statewide
improvements in standard Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) scores reported by the Connecticut State Department of Education (SDE) between 2008 and 2009 — the period of the largest reported gains — were largely the result of the exclusion of students with disabilities from these standard test results, rather than
overall improvements in performance.
These have all resulted
in significant
improvement in marks and
grades overall.
