In other words, several states are significantly underfunding their K - 12
systems, therefore jeopardizing the
overall quality of school districts and
education reforms that are proven to boost student achievement.
Crucially, an
overall school
quality rating can be easily added to the state's existing
system by building off the work that has already been completed — it would not override or eliminate any
of the progress made by the State Board
of Education.
These efforts will be increasingly productive as research provides us with more robust understandings
of how successful leaders make sense
of and productively respond to both external policy initiatives and local needs and priorities, and
of how those practices seep into the fabric
of the
education system, improving its
overall quality and substantially adding value to our students» learning.
We appreciate Governor Rauner's call for Illinois to demonstrate continued leadership in funding
quality early childhood
education as an essential part
of a larger investment in our
overall education system.
