Surveys indicate that many pregnant women in the United States, while not showing signs of
overt iodine deficiency, may obtain insufficient amounts of iodine [25].
The researchers concluded that, given that more women of childbearing have
an overt iodine deficiency as well as borderline iodine deficiency, and given the difficulty of limiting exposure to environmental perchlorate and thiocyanate, lactating women should focus on getting sufficient iodine as a way to protect their developing infants.
