Many e-readers over the years are sold with no digital
bookstore and force users to download their
own books from the internet (which encourages piracy) or find a compatible store and
use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer the purchases to their device.
The online
bookstore mainly just stocks titles in that language but it does have an English mode for advanced users that know how to load in their
own books and have no problem
using Calibre and Adobe Digital Editions.

using a free CreateSpace ISBN, a
bookstore will often see that it links to an Amazon affiliate (CreateSpace is
owned by Amazon), and might not order from them for two reasons: they're not able to make money off the books because they don't receive the typical discounts from other wholesale distributors like Lightning Source, and they may view an Amazon affiliate as a competitor.
Without a Bowker ISBN, you can't be included in that database, making it substantially more difficult for a
bookstore to order your books from the printing service you
use (CreateSpace and Ingram -
owned Lightning Source are the two most popular options, but there are others).

use their clients»
own query letters, publishers that make writers responsible for getting their
own books into
bookstores, independent editors who claim that manuscripts have to be «professionally» edited in order to be competitive)

If Amazon ever started telling authors «If you e-publish with us, you must
use our DRM or no deal» then they could pull off a monopsony — but only among the authors who settled for Amazon's terms instead of setting up their
own bookstore (or going with Fictionwise, ebooks.com, etc. — all Amazon competitors in the ebook market).
If you want to
use IngramSpark to get into
bookstores and libraries then yes, buy your
own ISBNs.
When you
use a POD service, your book is formatted across multiple platforms, so you can easily sell it on your
own website, through other online retailers, and on physical shelves in local
bookstores.
