Goals include reducing dietary calcium in order to reduce the calcium excreted in the urine, reducing
oxalic acid in the urine, inhibiting calcium oxalate crystal growth, and reducing urine specific gravity (concentration).
However, spinach and other dark leafy greens contain higher amounts
of oxalic acid which is known to cause kidney stones or kidney damage if you take in too much for too long.
Quinoa is known to
contain oxalic acid which can lead a problem in patients with a history of kidney stones.
The scientists concluded that «the difference in Mg absorption observed in the present study is attributed to the difference in
oxalic acid content between the two vegetables».
Steam for just long enough to wilt the spinach (about a minute), but keep it brightly colored — this
reduces oxalic acid yet preserves other nutrition.
Calcium oxalate is a calcium salt of
oxalic acid which creates pain and irritation to any soft tissues that it comes in contact with.
While spinach leaves lose some of their nutritional value when cooked, the process of cooking spinach can reduce the amount of
oxalic acid present.
We might also need to ingest orally certain bacteria probioticly to foster retinol (active Vitamin A), b - vitamin production (especially b12), digestion of anti-nutrients such
as oxalic acid and phytic acid, and immune stimulating effects.
If you are concerned
about oxalic acid in your rabbit's diet, other greens to limit include spinach, parsley, and beet greens.
The primary reason we're being told to rotate our vegetables is because of a chemical
called Oxalic Acid.
It's also important to eat a variety of leafy greens to get a variety of nutrition without overdoing it on potential toxins,
like oxalic acid.
Soak the seeds overnight and toast them to
remove oxalic acid which binds to the calcium rendering it bio-unavailable.
Veggies containing
oxalic acid include spinach, chard, parsley, chives, purslane and beet greens.
Urinary oxalate increased, although inconsistently, with dietary
oxalic acid only when the dietary calcium content was low (Stevenson et al. 2003a).
Oxalic acid does not circulate free in the body; it links to sodium or potassium in a soluble oxalate - salt form.
The
raw oxalic acid in beet juice is known to be a good solvent of inorganic (= bad) calcium deposits in the body.
Do you know much about or have any concerns
over oxalic acid, I'd be interested to hear your opinions, thanks xx
Although there is some mineral loss through boiling the greens, it is better to lose that
pesky oxalic acid.
I have read conflicting evidence regarding the value (or not) of almond skins: pro says flavonoids good; con
says oxalic acid bad.
The 14C ages were corrected for mass - dependent fractionation with measured δ13C values, 33 and compared with samples of Pleistocene whale bone or calcite (backgrounds, > 48 14C kyr BP), late Holocene bison bone (∼ 1,850 14C BP), late AD 1800s cow bone and OX - 2
oxalic acid standards for calibration.
A note for anyone who has a thyroid issue, or is otherwise trying to
avoid oxalic acid: use cooked spinach instead of raw.
However oxalic acid has health effects that mean you need to cook spinach more than the average cruciferous vegetable.
Increased calcium excretion and
increased oxalic acid excretion ride tandem and have been linked to osteoporosis.
The vitamin B - 6 deficiency leads to an increase in
blood oxalic acid, which in turn leads to an increase in urine oxalates.
Small, unobtrusive clusters of green flowers develop into dark purple berries which are an important food source for birds but contain
additional oxalic acid which can be moderately toxic to most mammals.
Leafy Greens I (need to be rotated due to
oxalic acid content and only 1 out of two varieties of greens a day should be from this list)
But when
oxalic acid finds itself in the presence of calcium, it has the ability to links to it too, forming a particular insoluble salt crystal - calcium oxalate.
One caveat with the green smoothies... apparently some have so overdosed
on oxalic acid from kale and other green smoothies, they required medical care.
