Loss of vegetated coastal habitats should lead to a decline in pH, whilst loss in the cover of corals and
oyster reefs and regime shifts towards a great dominance of macroalgae may lead to increased pH (Anthony et al. 2011).
Unlike pelagic ecosystems, coastal ecosystems are often dominated by benthic ecosystems, including engineering species (e.g. corals, seagrass, macroalgae, salt marshes, mangroves, sponges,
oyster reefs) with the capacity to modulate the chemical and physical conditions of their environment (Gutiérrez et al. 2011).
Temperate areas include the Northern Atlantic, South America and Northern Africa, which are host to rare and valuable habitats; including giant kelp forests,
oyster reefs and deep coral communities and which support rich fisheries.
So the two organizations are harnessing some of that talent to dream up ways to use the city's harbor and coastline to address the serious threat of sea - level rise resulting from global climate change, from creating
oyster reefs to incorporating porous streets.Earlier this month, the five multidisciplinary teams participating in the «Rising Currents» project presented their fruits of their eight - week architects - in - residence workshop to curious New Yorkers.

Lead author Emily Rivest of William & Mary's Virginia Institute of Marine Science says its findings are also likely applicable to other foundational
reef species such as
